Use this interactive demo to learn how to integrate GitHub Copilot with the Model Context Protocol.

‍

‍

Here’s how you can integrate GitHub Copilot with Model Context Protocol:

‍

  1. Open VS Code and click the gear icon at the bottom left to jump into your extensions view.
  2. Hit the filter icon in the search bar to help you find exactly what you need.
  3. Select "MCP servers" from the dropdown. This filters out everything except MCP-compatible extensions.
  4. Type "@mcp GitHub" into the search bar to pull up the GitHub MCP server integration.
  5. Click "GitHub" from the results to see what it does and why you'll want it installed.
  6. Hit "Install" to connect GitHub's MCP server with Copilot. Takes just a second.
  7. Click "Allow" to authorize the connection.
  8. Go to the GitHub Copilot Chat icon.
  9. Click 'Agent' and select 'MCP AppService Builder' from the list.
  10. By following these steps, you enable GitHub Copilot to interact with external tools and services, providing it with more context and expanding its capabilities beyond basic code completion and general chat.
