Here’s how you can integrate GitHub Copilot with Model Context Protocol:
- Open VS Code and click the gear icon at the bottom left to jump into your extensions view.
- Hit the filter icon in the search bar to help you find exactly what you need.
- Select "MCP servers" from the dropdown. This filters out everything except MCP-compatible extensions.
- Type "@mcp GitHub" into the search bar to pull up the GitHub MCP server integration.
- Click "GitHub" from the results to see what it does and why you'll want it installed.
- Hit "Install" to connect GitHub's MCP server with Copilot. Takes just a second.
- Click "Allow" to authorize the connection.
- Go to the GitHub Copilot Chat icon.
- Click 'Agent' and select 'MCP AppService Builder' from the list.
- By following these steps, you enable GitHub Copilot to interact with external tools and services, providing it with more context and expanding its capabilities beyond basic code completion and general chat.
