Use this interactive demo to learn how to earn achievements by merging pull requests on GitHub.

Quick summary

GitHub Achievements are badges earned by completing specific activities, such as merging pull requests, directly on your GitHub profile. Repeatedly merging pull requests across multiple repositories unlocks milestones like the Pull Shark achievement.

Steps

  1. Go to the Pull requests section on your GitHub dashboard.
  2. Select a pull request from the list to open it.
  3. Click the Merge pull request button to initiate the merge.
  4. Confirm the action by clicking Confirm merge.
  5. After merging, note that completing this action can earn you a GitHub achievement.
  6. Click your profile icon and select Your profile to view your achievements.
  7. When you have multiple pull requests merged across various repositories, you can unlock the Pull Shark achievement on your profile.
  8. Remember that achievements are earned by completing specific activities within GitHub.

📌 Why this matters

GitHub Achievements provide developers with a visible, gamified way to showcase their open-source contributions and coding activity directly on their public profile. Earning badges like Pull Shark — awarded for merging multiple pull requests across repositories — signals consistent collaboration and code quality to recruiters and teammates. For developers building their professional reputation, GitHub Achievements turn everyday contributions into tangible, searchable credentials. Understanding how to earn these achievements helps developers stay motivated, track progress, and stand out in a competitive tech landscape.
