How to Create Dashboards with External Data in Coda

Use this interactive demo to learn how to sync external data into Coda dashboards automatically.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to create a Coda dashboard with external data by building a Zapier automation that connects a source like Trello to a Coda table, mapping fields and syncing rows automatically. Once the Zap is live, your Coda dashboard updates in real time whenever the external data changes.

Steps

  1. Log in to Zapier, click "Create", and select "Zaps" to start building a new automation.
  2. Choose your preferred data source (such as Trello) from the available trigger app options.
  3. Select the specific data event you want to import into Coda, for example "Card Updated".
  4. Connect your Trello account to authorize Zapier to access your data.
  5. Select the dataset (board or list) you want to sync into Coda.
  6. Click "Test Trigger" to verify that Zapier can pull a sample record from your data source.
  7. Select Coda as the Action App for the second step of the Zap.
  8. Choose "Create Row" or "Update Row" as the Coda action to perform when the trigger fires.
  9. Connect your Coda account to authorize Zapier to write data to your doc.
  10. Map the external data fields to the corresponding Coda table columns to define what data lands where.
  11. Click "Test step" to confirm the integration writes a row to your Coda table correctly.
  12. Publish the Zap — your external data is now visualized in Coda and will update automatically going forward.

📌 Why this matters

Creating dashboards with external data in Coda lets teams centralize information from tools like Trello directly into a living, auto-updating doc — eliminating manual data entry and keeping everyone aligned on the latest information. By using a Zapier integration as the data pipeline, any change in a connected source instantly flows into a Coda table, making real-time reporting and decision-making faster and more reliable. This workflow is especially valuable for project managers and operations teams who need a single source of truth without switching between multiple apps or exporting spreadsheets.
