Use this interactive demo to learn how to use the Pen tool in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to use the pen tool in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To learn how to use the Pen Tool in Adobe InDesign, go to the left toolbar and select the 'Pen' Tool.
  2. To create curved lines, select the line to reveal its anchor points. Using the pen tool, click the middle anchor point and drag outward and sideways to form a curve.
  3. To add or delete anchor points: right-click the pen tool in the left toolbar to access the additional tools available under it. Select the 'Add Anchor Point Tool'
  4. Click on the object or line where you want to add a new anchor point.
  5. After clicking on the outline with the tool, a new anchor point is added to the shape or line.

📌 Why this matters

You'll create custom graphics, logos, and illustrations directly within your layouts instead of switching between multiple applications. The real advantage lies in vector precision—your pen tool creations scale perfectly from business cards to billboards without quality loss.

While most designers import artwork from other programs, mastering this tool transforms InDesign from a layout application into a complete design suite. You'll work faster, maintain consistency across projects, and have complete control over every design element in your publications.
