This tutorial shows how to use 1Password as your authenticator app so you can store and autofill two-factor authentication (2FA) codes without switching to a separate app like Google Authenticator or Authy.
Notes:
- The website or service you're setting up must support authenticator app-based 2FA. 1Password will generate and autofill the one-time code each time you sign in.
- If the QR code scan doesn't work, click "Can't scan the QR code?" on the site to reveal a secret key. In 1Password, open the login item, click edit, then "Add More," choose "One-Time Password," and paste the key manually.
- Sign in to the account where you want to set up 2FA - for example, your Google or Slack account and go to its security settings.
- Look for the two-factor authentication or two-step verification option and select the authenticator app method. The site will display a QR code.
- Click the 1Password extension in your browser toolbar. It should automatically detect the login item for that site and display it.
- Click the ellipsis (three dots) on the login item, then select "Scan QR Code." 1Password scans the QR code on the page and links the account.
- Back on the website, enter the six-digit code now showing in 1Password to confirm the setup, then save your changes on the site.
- Confirm the settings to see that 2FA is now active with 1Password as your authenticator.
- Sign out and sign back in to test it. When prompted for your 2FA code, 1Password will autofill it automatically along with your username and password.
