How to Transfer Apple Passwords to 1Password

Use this interactive demo to learn how to transfer your Apple passwords to 1Password.

‍

This tutorial shows how to export your saved passwords from Apple Passwords on a Mac and import them into your 1Password account on the web.

Note: You'll need a Mac running Safari 15 or later to export from Apple Passwords. Only login items (usernames and passwords) will be transferred - credit cards, addresses, and passkeys won't be included. Before exporting, temporarily turn off any backup software so the unencrypted file isn't saved to your backups. Delete the CSV file from your computer once the import is complete.

  1. Open the Passwords app or Safari on your Mac. Click File in the menu bar, then select Export > Passwords. Enter your Mac login password when prompted. Save the exported CSV file to your desktop.
  2. Go to 1password.com in your browser and sign in to your account. Alternatively, click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar to sign in.
  3. Click your account name in the top-right corner of the page, then select Import Data from the dropdown.
  4. On the Import Data page, select iCloud Keychain or Safari from the list of apps.
  5. Read the reminders carefully, select the vault you want to import your passwords into, for example, Personal or Private, then click Continue until you reach the Upload tab.
  6. Drag your CSV file into the upload area, or click Select a File From Your Computer to browse for it, then click Continue.‍
  7. Your passwords are now available across all your 1Password apps and browser extensions. Review the import summary to confirm how many items were added. Go back to your computer and permanently delete the CSV file.

📌 Why this matters

Apple Passwords is convenient if you're already in the Apple ecosystem, but it has real limitations - no Windows support, no advanced vault organization, and no way to store things like secure notes or credit cards alongside your logins. Moving to 1Password gives you a more complete password management setup that works across every device and browser you use, not just Apple ones. The transfer takes just a few minutes, and once it's done, everything is encrypted and accessible wherever you need it.
