‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to shape text in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To create shaped text in Adobe InDesign, go to the left-hand toolbar, click the 'Rectangle Tool', and select your preferred shape to use as a text template.
  2. Drag your chosen shape onto the page, then select the 'Type Tool' from the left toolbar to insert text into the shape.
  3. Click inside the shape to place the cursor, then type or paste your paragraph.
  4. Notice how the text flows along the shape template. Repeat the steps with other shapes to see the effect.
  5. Once the text is inserted into the shapes, open the Properties panel, select 'Stroke,' and set it to 'None' to make the shape’s frame invisible.
  6. You have successfully shaped text in Adobe InDesign.

📌 Why this matters

Shaping text transforms ordinary paragraphs into eye-catching design elements that guide readers through your layout naturally. You can create magazine-style callouts, wrap text around product images, or build visual hierarchy that makes dense content digestible.

Beyond aesthetics, shaped text actually improves comprehension by breaking up monotonous blocks and creating visual breathing room. Your readers' eyes follow the contours you create, letting you control their journey through information while maintaining professional readability standards that rectangular text blocks simply cannot achieve.
