This tutorial shows you how to create a 1Password account and access your vault using a browser.
Note: 1Password does not have a free plan. All plans include a 14-day free trial. No desktop app is required to complete this setup.
- Open your browser and go to 1password.com. Choose a plan and click "Try Free for 14-days" to start the sign-up process. If you have not installed the extension yet, a page to add an extension will appear; otherwise, it will skip to the sign-up page.
- Enter your name and work email address and click "Next." This email becomes the login identifier for your account.
- Open your inbox and copy the verification code in the email from 1Password. Paste the code and click Next twice to continue. This confirms your email address and continues the setup.
- On the next page, create a strong account password on the next screen and click "Create Account." This is the master password you'll use to unlock your vault every time you sign in. Choose something complex and memorable because 1Password cannot reset it for you.
- Click Generate Secret Key to generate your Secret Key, then click "Save PDF," open the PDF, and write or type in your account password. Store it somewhere safe, such as a printed copy in a secure location. The PDF contains your Secret Key and is the only way to recover access to your account if you forget your password.
- Click "Next" to enter your vault. A page to Payment Method will appear; you can fill it out or skip. The 1Password dashboard opens with your default private vault ready to store passwords, credit cards, and secure notes.
