Use this interactive demo to learn how to prioritize tasks in Microsoft To Do.

‍

‍

Microsoft To Do uses starring (flagging as important) as its main prioritization method, with sorting and My Day for focus.

‍

  1. On your Microsoft 365 main dashboard, click the App launcher in the upper-left corner.
  2. From the app list, select To Do to open Microsoft To Do.
  3. Click on an existing task or create a new one.
  4. Click the Star icon next to a task to instantly move it to your "Important" list for high visibility.
  5. In the Detail Pane that opens on the right, click on the Add to My Day button.
  6. Click the Sort icon at the top of your list and choose Importance to bubble all starred items to the top.
  7. Click Add due date to set when this task needs completion.
  8. Click Remind me to set up a notification alert.
  9. Review your list daily to ensure your energy is spent on the right objectives, and you’re all set.

📌 Why this matters

Task prioritization prevents you from drowning in busy work that feels productive but doesn't move the needle. Starring creates a visual hierarchy that cuts through mental clutter when you're deciding what deserves your attention next.

The real power comes from combining importance with time-bound focus through My Day - this forces you to confront the gap between what you think matters and what you can realistically accomplish. Daily reviews turn prioritization from a one-time setup into a habit that keeps you aligned with your actual goals.
