How to Import Passwords into 1Password

Use this interactive demo to learn how to import passwords into 1Password.

‍

This tutorial shows how to import passwords into 1Password from another password manager or app using a CSV file on 1password.com.

Note: You'll need a CSV file of your exported passwords before starting. To get one, go to your current password manager and look for an export option - most support CSV format. Before exporting, temporarily turn off any backup software so the unencrypted file isn't saved to your backups. Delete the CSV file from your computer once the import is complete.

  1. Go to 1password.com  in your browser and sign in to your account. Alternatively, click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar to sign in.
  2. Click your account name in the top-right corner of the page, then select "Import Data" from the dropdown.
  3. On the Import Data page, select your previous password manager from the list. If it isn't listed, select from somewhere else or choose “CSV file.”
  4. Read the reminders carefully, select the vault you want to import your passwords into, for example, "Personal" or "Private",  then click Continue until you reach the Upload tab.
  5. Drag your CSV file into the upload area, or click "Select a File From Your Computer" to browse for it, then click "Continue."
  6. Review the column mapping to make sure each field (Title, Username, Password, Website) is assigned correctly. Adjust any labels that need fixing, then click "Continue" to complete the import.
  7. Your passwords are now available across all your 1Password apps and browser extensions. Review the import summary to confirm how many items were added.

📌 Why this matters

Switching password managers shouldn't mean starting from scratch. Importing your existing passwords into 1Password takes just minutes and immediately gives you access to your full vault with no manual re-entry required. This is especially important if you're moving from a less secure setup, like a browser's built-in password manager or a spreadsheet, where your credentials have less protection. Once your passwords are inside 1Password, they're encrypted and accessible across every device you use, giving you stronger security without losing any of the convenience you're used to.
