Use this interactive demo to learn how to obtain your GitHub Copilot API key.

‍

‍

Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. Click on your profile icon in the top right corner to open the menu.
  2. Select "Settings" from the dropdown to access your account configuration.
  3. Scroll down the sidebar and click on "Developer settings" near the bottom.
  4. Now, click on "Personal access tokens" to manage your API credentials.
  5. Choose "Tokens (classic)" for traditional token generation.
  6. Click "Generate new token" and select "Generate new token (classic)" from the dropdown.
  7. Click 'Verify via email' to continue.
  8. Choose and select your project scope.
  9. Scroll down and click "Generate token" to create your new API key.
  10. All done! Use this token in your Copilot API requests. Keep it secret, keep it safe.

📌 Why this matters

Getting your GitHub Copilot API key unlocks programmatic access to AI-powered code generation, letting you integrate Copilot's capabilities directly into your own applications, scripts, or development workflows.

Beyond basic code completion, this opens up automation possibilities most developers miss—you can build custom tools that generate boilerplate code, create documentation from existing codebases, or even develop AI-assisted debugging utilities. The API access transforms Copilot from a passive editor plugin into an active development partner you can orchestrate however your projects demand.
