Use this interactive demo to learn how to selectively erase parts of an image in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to erase part of an image in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To remove part of an image in InDesign, use the 'Selection Tool' from the left toolbar to crop the image.
  2. Select the image, then drag the frame handles inward to crop and remove unwanted parts.
  3. Using the cropping method, the unnecessary portions of the image have been successfully removed.
  4. To remove parts of an image using a shape, go to the left toolbar, click the 'Rectangle Tool', and choose your preferred shape.
  5. Drag the shape over the image to cover the area you want to keep, then right-click the image and select 'Cut.'
  6. Right-click the shape and select 'Paste Into' to place the image inside the shape.
  7. The image is now placed inside the shape, and the unwanted parts have been removed.

📌 Why this matters

Removing unwanted portions from images gives you precise control over your layout composition without switching to external photo editing software. You can eliminate distracting backgrounds, focus attention on specific subjects, or create custom shapes that align perfectly with your design vision.

This workflow keeps everything contained within your document, maintaining live links to original files while preserving image quality. When clients request last-minute changes or you need to adapt existing images to fit unexpected design constraints, these techniques let you respond quickly without disrupting your entire project timeline.
