Use this interactive demo to learn how to curve a line in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to curve a line in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To curve a line in InDesign, select the 'Line' Tool from the left toolbar and draw a line on your workspace.
  2. Select 'Pen Tool' → 'Add Anchor Point Tool' and add an anchor point to the middle of the line.
  3. Select the 'Direct Selection' Tool from the left toolbar, then drag a selection box around the middle anchor point of the line.
  4. Once done, Press 'Shift + Up/Down Arrow' to move the middle anchor point up or down.
  5. To create the arc or curve, select the 'Pen' Tool, hold Option, and drag the anchor point until the line forms the desired arc. Adjust the middle anchor point as needed to refine the curve’s shape and half circumference.

📌 Why this matters

Curved lines transform rigid layouts into dynamic, flowing designs that guide readers' eyes naturally through your content. You can create elegant dividers, decorative elements, or subtle pathway indicators that add visual interest without overwhelming your design.

Beyond aesthetics, curved elements establish visual hierarchy and create psychological comfort—straight lines suggest structure and formality, while curves evoke movement and approachability. This technique bridges the gap between technical precision and organic creativity, letting you soften corporate materials or add sophistication to casual designs without importing external graphics.
