‍

‍

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to create an ER diagram in Lucidchart step by step.

‍

  1. On the left panel of the editor, click Shapes.
  2. In the Shapes panel, click More Shapes at the bottom.
  3. In the shape library window, select Entity Relationship (ERD).
  4. Click Use Selected Shapes at the bottom of the window.
  5. From the left toolbar, choose an entity shape.
  6. Drag the entity shape onto the canvas, and you’re good to go!

📌 Why this matters

Creating ER diagrams helps you map out database relationships before writing a single line of code, preventing costly structural changes later. You can visualize how tables connect, identify potential bottlenecks, and ensure data integrity from the start. Beyond technical planning, these diagrams become powerful communication tools when working with stakeholders who don't speak SQL. They translate complex database concepts into visual stories that business teams can understand, making it easier to validate requirements and get sign-off on your data architecture decisions.
