Try this interactive demo to learn how to change the model in GitHub Copilot within Visual Studio Code.

‍

‍

You can change the AI model for GitHub Copilot in VS Code by following these steps:

‍

  1. Open the GitHub Copilot Chat view in the sidebar in VS code.
  2. At the bottom of the chat view, under the input field, click the dropdown menu showing the 'Auto' menu.
  3. By clicking the drop down arrow, you can select and change your desired AI model from the list.

📌 Why this matters

Different AI models excel at different programming tasks - some are better at explaining complex code, while others generate more accurate suggestions for specific languages or frameworks. Switching models lets you match the AI's strengths to your current work.

More importantly, each model has distinct training data and reasoning approaches, so trying different ones when you're stuck can unlock fresh perspectives on the same problem. This flexibility transforms Copilot from a single assistant into a team of specialized coding partners.
