Use this interactive demo to learn how to adjust the kerning in your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change text kerning back to its default in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To revert text with kerning to its default setting, go to the right-side menu and click the 'Paragraph Style' icon.
  2. Once the panel opens, click the 'a+' icon (Style Override Highlighter) to highlight the letters in the text where kerning was applied.
  3. Text with kerning will be highlighted, and you will also see the kerning value being used (InDesign’s default is Metric).
  4. Click the inverted 'P+' icon at the bottom of the Paragraph Style panel to clear paragraph overrides, including kerning.‍
  5. The letters will return to their original spacing as the kerning resets to Metric (default).

📌 Why this matters

Resetting kerning to default saves you from typography inconsistencies that can plague professional documents. When you inherit files from other designers or work with multiple team members, custom kerning adjustments often accumulate without clear documentation.

These tweaks might look fine individually, but they create subtle spacing variations that become noticeable when you need uniform text formatting across lengthy publications. By clearing these overrides, you establish a clean baseline that ensures consistent character spacing throughout your project, making future typography decisions more predictable and maintaining visual harmony across all text elements.
