Use this interactive demo to learn how to change the DPI settings in your Adobe InDesign projects.

‍

‍

Here’s a step by step quick guide on how to change DPI in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. Go to the top menu and click 'File.'
  2. Select 'Export' to save your document to your computer and access its file details.
  3. Customize your export options, then click 'Save' when finished.
  4. An Export JPEG panel will open, go to 'Resolution (PPI)' and customize its value to change its DPI when exported.
  5. Once done, click 'Export' to finalize saving your document.‍
  6. Locate your exported JPEG on your computer, then check its properties to confirm the image DPI reflects the value you applied.

📌 Why this matters

Adjusting DPI during export ensures your designs meet specific printing or digital requirements without recreating the entire document. Print shops typically require 300 DPI for crisp results, while web graphics work best at 72 DPI for faster loading. Beyond meeting technical specs, controlling resolution directly impacts file size and quality trade-offs.

Higher DPI creates larger files with more detail, while lower settings reduce storage needs and transfer times. This export-level control means you can maintain one master InDesign file while generating multiple versions optimized for different platforms and purposes.
