Use this interactive demo to learn how to change the color of bullets in your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to change bullet color in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To change the bullet color in InDesign, go to the top menu and click 'Window.'
  2. Select 'Styles' → 'Character Styles.'
  3. A panel will open. Click the '+' icon at the bottom to create a new style (you can rename it for easier identification).
  4. Click your new style to open the Character Style Options box, then go to 'Character Color.'
  5. Choose your preferred color, then click 'OK.'
  6. Highlight your text or bulleted list, go to Bullets and Numbering, and click 'Options' to access more bullet settings.
  7. Under the Character Style, choose 'Bullet Color' from the dropdown menu, then click 'OK.'‍
  8. The color change is applied, indicating the bullets were successfully updated.

📌 Why this matters

Changing bullet colors transforms basic text lists into cohesive design elements that reinforce your brand identity and visual hierarchy. You can match bullets to your color scheme, create emphasis through contrast, or use different colors to categorize information within the same document.

Beyond aesthetics, colored bullets guide readers' attention and create visual breaks that improve readability. This technique is particularly valuable when designing reports, presentations, or marketing materials where consistency across all elements—including the smallest details like bullets—demonstrates professional polish and attention to detail.
