‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to bold text in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To bold text in InDesign, highlight the text you want to make bold.
  2. In the Character section, open the Font Style menu and select Bold. If the Bold option is not available, choose a font that includes a bold style.
  3. For this tutorial, we will use Letter Gothic Std, which is a thin font that includes a bold formatting.
  4. After choosing the font family, open the Font Style dropdown and select Bold.‍
  5. You have successfully applied bold formatting to text in InDesign.

📌 Why this matters

Bolding text creates visual hierarchy that guides readers through your document, making key information instantly scannable. You can emphasize headlines, callouts, and important terms without relying on color or size changes that might not translate well across different output formats.

Bold formatting also maintains its impact whether your design ends up in print, digital, or accessible formats where screen readers recognize the emphasis. This technique becomes especially powerful when you're working with large amounts of text where subtle emphasis helps break up dense paragraphs and improves overall readability.
