‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to blur image in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To apply a blur to an object or image in InDesign, first select the 'Rectangle' Tool from the left toolbar.
  2. Select the 'Ellipse' Tool and draw a circle over the image.
  3. Once the shape is drawn, click the 'Fill' box to open the Color Picker panel.
  4. Once the Color panel opens, select the 'Eyedropper (Dropper)' Tool and click on the area you want to sample, such as the face, to pick its color.
  5. After choosing your color, click 'OK' to fill the shape with the selected color.
  6. In the Appearance section, click 'Basic' Feather to open the Effects panel, or right-click the shape and choose 'Effects' → 'Basic Feather.'
  7. Adjust the feather width to control how much the blur spreads over the image, then click 'OK'. You can also adjust the opacity as needed.
  8. You have successfully applied a blur to an image or object in InDesign.

📌 Why this matters

Blurring images lets you create privacy-friendly layouts by obscuring faces, text, or sensitive information while maintaining visual composition. You can also achieve artistic effects like selective focus or dreamy backgrounds without external photo editing software.

This technique becomes particularly powerful when you're working with client-provided images that can't be altered permanently, or when you need to create multiple versions of the same layout with varying levels of detail visibility. The blur stays editable within your document, giving you complete control over the final appearance.
