Use this interactive demo to learn how to arc text in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to arc text in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To arc text in your InDesign project, go to the left toolbar and select the 'Line' Tool.
  2. Draw a line on your workspace. Then, from the left toolbar, select 'Pen' Tool → 'Add Anchor Point' Tool and add an anchor point to the line.
  3. Using the 'Pen' Tool, place an anchor point in the middle of the line.
  4. Go to the left toolbar and select the 'Direct Selection' Tool, then drag a selection box over the middle anchor point of the line.
  5. Press 'Shift + Up/Down Arrow' to move the middle anchor point up or down.
  6. To create the arc, select the 'Pen' Tool, hold Option, and drag the anchor point until the line forms an arc shape.
  7. Once the arc is created, select 'Type' Tool → 'Type on a Path' Tool and type text along the curve.
  8. Once finished, select the line and remove its stroke to make the path invisible, so the text appears without a visible line.
  9. You have successfully arced text in your InDesign project.

📌 Why this matters

Arcing text transforms flat layouts into dynamic designs that guide readers' eyes naturally through your content. You can create eye-catching headers, follow the curves of logos or graphics, and add movement to otherwise static pages.

This technique becomes particularly powerful when you realize that curved text subconsciously suggests motion and energy, making your designs feel more alive and engaging. It's the difference between text that simply sits on a page and text that actively participates in your visual storytelling.
