How to Add Tags to Microsoft To Do

Try this interactive demo to learn how to add tags to your Microsoft To-Do tasks.

‍

‍

Tags allow you to categorize and filter tasks across all your lists using keywords preceded by a hashtag. Here is the simple guide:

‍

  1. On your Microsoft 365 main dashboard, click the App launcher in the upper-left corner.
  2. From the app list, select To Do to open Microsoft To Do.
  3. Click on an existing task or create a new one.
  4. Locate the field at the bottom of the pane labeled Add note.
  5. Type the # symbol followed by a keyword into the note field and press Enter to create a blue, clickable link.
  6. Click any blue hashtag or type it into the search bar to instantly find all tasks with that tag.

📌 Why this matters

Tags transform scattered tasks across multiple lists into an organized system you can search instantly. While creating separate lists for projects seems logical, tags let you maintain your existing workflow while adding a powerful layer of organization.

You can tag tasks by priority, context, or project without restructuring everything. This becomes especially valuable when tasks relate to multiple categories - a work presentation that's both urgent and requires creative input can carry both tags, making it findable from either angle.
