‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to add different shapes in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To add shapes to your project, go to the left-side menu and select the 'Rectangle Tool.'
  2. This tool group includes three shape tools for creating shapes such as rectangles, polygons, and circles. Select the tool you want to use.
  3. To create a rectangle, click and drag the Rectangle Tool on the document.
  4. To create a square, hold the Shift key while clicking and dragging the tool on the document to keep all sides equal.
  5. To create circles or ovals, select the Ellipse Tool and click and drag on the document.
  6. To create polygons, select the Polygon Tool and click on the document. The Polygon Settings panel will open.
  7. Adjust the settings for your polygon shape. For this tutorial, set it to 8 sides to create an octagon, then click 'OK.'‍
  8. The polygon will appear automatically, or you can click and drag on the document to draw it.You have now successfully added different shapes to your InDesign project.

📌 Why this matters

Adding shapes transforms your layouts from text-heavy documents into visually engaging designs that guide readers through your content. You can create callout boxes, dividers, infographics, and branded elements that break up dense information.

Beyond basic decoration, shapes serve as containers for text and images, helping establish visual hierarchy and brand consistency. They're also infinitely scalable vector objects, meaning your designs stay crisp whether you're printing business cards or building-sized banners, making them essential for any professional layout work.
