Use this interactive demo to learn how to enable and explore Epics in your Jira Backlog.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to view Epics in Jira by navigating to the Backlog and enabling the Epic Panel through View Settings. Once enabled, Epics appear in a dedicated panel where you can select them to filter associated issues instantly.

Steps

  1. Head over to the Backlogs section in the left navigation pane.
  2. Click on View Settings on the right side of the screen and enable the Epic Panel.
  3. Your Epics will now appear on the left side of the Backlog — if no Epic exists, you can create one from this panel.
  4. Click on the Epic tile to select it.
  5. The issues associated with the selected Epic will be automatically filtered for viewing.

📌 Why this matters

Viewing Epics in Jira helps agile teams quickly organize and filter backlog issues by high-level initiatives, giving project managers clear visibility into progress across large bodies of work. The Epic Panel in Jira's Backlog view centralizes epic tracking alongside sprint planning, reducing the need to switch between screens. Enabling this feature streamlines sprint grooming sessions and ensures that every issue is correctly mapped to a strategic goal. Teams that use Jira Epics effectively can better prioritize work, spot scope gaps, and deliver projects on schedule.
