Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and run a Scrum project in Jira from scratch.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to use Jira for project planning by walking through creating a Scrum project, building a backlog with epics and user stories, and launching a sprint. It covers every step from project setup to board management so teams can start tracking work immediately.

Steps

  1. Click Projects and then the Create Project button to begin setting up a new Jira project.
  2. Select the Software Development category and choose the Scrum template.
  3. Click Use Template to apply the Scrum template to your new project.
  4. Open Backlog in the sidebar, then click Epic to expand the epic drop-down menu.
  5. Name your epic (for example, "Website Redesign") and click Create to save it.
  6. In the Backlog view, click Create Issue and select Story to add a user story.
  7. Write a summary for the story and link it to your Epic.
  8. Click Create Sprint, drag your stories into the sprint, then click Start Sprint.
  9. Set the sprint duration and click Start to activate it.
  10. Use the board view to drag tasks across columns and track progress throughout the sprint.

📌 Why this matters

Jira is the industry-standard tool for agile project planning, enabling software teams to organize work into epics, user stories, and sprints in a single platform. Effective Jira setup directly reduces project ambiguity, improves sprint velocity, and keeps cross-functional teams aligned on priorities. Teams that structure their backlog correctly in Jira can plan, execute, and ship faster by having a clear, real-time view of every task from creation to completion. This demo is essential for any team adopting Scrum for the first time or looking to standardize their Jira workflow for better delivery outcomes.
