Use this interactive demo to learn how to set and view a baseline in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

Setting a baseline in Microsoft Project captures a snapshot of your original plan so you can track schedule variance and compare planned versus actual progress over time. Microsoft Project supports up to 11 baselines per project, making it easy to monitor changes across multiple project phases.

Steps

  1. Click on the Project tab at the top of your screen to access baseline options.
  2. In the Schedule group, select Set Baseline to capture a snapshot of your current plan for future comparison.
  3. From the dropdown menu, click Set Baseline... to open the baseline options dialog box.
  4. Choose which baseline number you want to use from the dropdown — Microsoft Project allows up to 11 baselines per project.
  5. Select the Entire project option to apply the baseline to all tasks in your schedule.
  6. Click OK to save your baseline.
  7. Navigate to your Gantt Chart view to see gray bars for the baseline and blue or red bars for the current schedule.

📌 Why this matters

Tracking project performance against a baseline is essential for effective project management in Microsoft Project. By setting a baseline, project managers can instantly identify schedule slippage, cost overruns, and scope changes by comparing the original plan to actual progress. The Gantt Chart baseline view provides a clear visual comparison that helps teams make data-driven decisions and keep stakeholders informed. Supporting up to 11 baselines per project, Microsoft Project gives teams the flexibility to capture and compare multiple plan snapshots throughout the project lifecycle.
