‍

Here’s a quick and simple guide to using Liquid Layout in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To learn how to use Liquid Layout in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click 'Window.'
  2. From the menu, select 'Interactive' → 'Liquid Layout' to open the Liquid Layout panel.
  3. Under Liquid Layout, click the drop-down menu for Liquid Page Rule to view the page options available for the document.
  4. Scale is best used for simple layouts where all elements need to resize proportionally together.
  5. Re-center keeps objects centered when the page size changes.
  6. Object-Based provides precise control with adjustable constraints, making it the most flexible option—ideal for detailed or complex layouts.
  7. Guide-Based uses manually placed Liquid Guides to control how objects resize.
  8. To apply this to your document, select a Liquid Layout option, then dragthecorners of the page inward or outward to see how the layout adjusts. HoldOption (Mac) and Alt (Windows) while dragging to apply the changes.

📌 Why this matters

Liquid Layout lets you create designs that automatically adapt to different page sizes without manually repositioning every element. You can resize layouts for various formats—from print brochures to digital publications—while maintaining design integrity. What makes this particularly powerful is that it transforms static layouts into responsive systems.

Instead of creating separate versions for different dimensions, you build once with intelligent constraints that handle the adaptation. This becomes essential when repurposing content across multiple formats or when clients request size variations after your design is complete.
