Use this interactive demo to learn how to insert dynamic variables into your SendGrid email templates.

Quick summary

SendGrid's Design Editor lets you insert basic variables into email templates using the built-in Tags panel, enabling personalized content at scale. In just a few steps, you can copy a variable, paste it into any text module, and save your changes without writing any code.

Steps

  1. In SendGrid's Design Editor, open the left-side panel and select the Tags tab.
  2. Browse the variable list, find the one you need, and click the Copy button next to it.
  3. In the preview area, click the text module you want to edit.
  4. Paste the variable into the text module content area.
  5. Click outside the selected module, then repeat the steps to add more custom variable values as needed.
  6. When finished, click Save to apply all changes to your email template.

📌 Why this matters

SendGrid's basic variables feature allows email marketers to personalize campaigns at scale by dynamically inserting recipient-specific data — such as first name or company name — directly into email templates. Using the Design Editor's Tags panel, teams can copy and paste variables into any text module without writing code, reducing production time and human error. Personalized emails consistently outperform generic sends in open rates and click-through rates, making this a critical capability for any email marketing workflow. Mastering SendGrid variables helps organizations deliver relevant, targeted communication to every subscriber automatically.
