Use this interactive demo to learn how to update links in your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to update links in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To update links in Adobe InDesign, open the Links panel by clicking the 'Chain' icon on the right-side menu or by going to 'Window' → 'Links.'
  2. When the panel opens, icons will show the status of each file. In this tutorial, the file is shown as missing.
  3. Right-click the image layer to relink it and navigate to the file’s location.
  4. Once you locate the file, select it and click 'Open.'‍
  5. The image link is now successfully updated and fixed in the Links panel.

📌 Why this matters

Broken links don't just create missing images – they silently corrupt your entire design workflow. When you move files or collaborate with others, InDesign loses track of assets, but the software continues functioning without obvious warnings.

This means you could spend hours perfecting layouts only to discover at print time that half your images are low-resolution placeholders. Updating links properly ensures you're always working with the highest quality versions of your assets and maintains the connection between your design and source files.
