How to Switch from LastPass to 1Password

Use this interactive demo to learn how to switch from LastPass to 1Password.

‍

This tutorial shows how to move your saved passwords from LastPass to 1Password by exporting a CSV file from LastPass and importing it into your 1Password account on the web.

Notes

  • You'll need an active LastPass account and an existing 1Password account to complete this process. The exported CSV file will contain all your passwords in plain text - delete it from your computer immediately after the import is complete. Before exporting, temporarily turn off any backup software so the unencrypted file isn't saved to your backups.
  • LastPass Authenticator one-time passwords won't be carried over. You can add these to 1Password manually after the import is complete.
  1. Go to 1password.com in your browser and sign in to your account. Alternatively, click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar to sign in.
  2. Click your account name in the top-right corner of the page, then select Import Data from the dropdown.
  3. On the Import Data page, select LastPass from the list of password managers.
  4. If you're on Desktop, there’s an option to import directly. Otherwise, choose to upload a CSV file.
  5. If you have not yet exported, read and follow the directions of the export process on LastPass, then click Continue. Proceed to select the vault you want to import your passwords into - for example, Personal or Private - then click Continue to the Upload tab.
  6. Drag your LastPass CSV file into the upload area, or click Select a File From Your Computer to browse for it, then click Continue.‍
  7. Your passwords are now available across all your 1Password apps and browser extensions. Review the import summary to confirm how many items were added. Go back to your computer and permanently delete the CSV file.

📌 Why this matters

Staying on a password manager you've lost trust in is a real security risk — especially if you're still using the same vault you had during a breach. Switching to 1Password gives you a fresh start with stronger encryption and a more transparent security model, without losing any of your saved credentials. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and once it's done, your entire password history moves with you so you're not locked out of anything during the transition.
