Use this interactive demo to learn how to apply strikethrough formatting to text in Jira.

Quick summary

Strikethrough in Jira lets you visually cross out text in issue descriptions and comments to indicate completed or deprecated information. You can apply it using the format bar dropdown or the keyboard shortcut CMD + Shift + S.

Steps

  1. Open the Jira card you want to edit by clicking on it from the board.
  2. Navigate to the description field and select the text you want to strikethrough.
  3. Click the three-dot option (...) in the format bar and select Strikethrough from the dropdown.
  4. Alternatively, press CMD + Shift + S on your keyboard to apply strikethrough formatting.
  5. Click Save to confirm and finish editing.
  6. To strikethrough text in comments, follow the same steps within the comment field.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to apply strikethrough formatting in Jira helps teams clearly communicate task status, mark deprecated requirements, or flag resolved issues directly within an issue's description or comments. This built-in text formatting feature reduces ambiguity in project tracking without requiring external notes or workarounds. Teams using Jira for agile project management can keep issue history clean and readable by visually crossing out outdated information in-line. Mastering simple formatting shortcuts like strikethrough improves collaboration speed and reduces back-and-forth communication across development and operations teams.
