Use this interactive demo to learn how to link and visualize task dependencies in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

Task dependencies in Microsoft Project define the order in which tasks must be completed, ensuring your project schedule reflects real-world sequencing. Using the Link Tasks feature, you can create Finish-to-Start and other dependency types that automatically update your Gantt chart when dates change.

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Project and navigate to the Task tab in the ribbon.
  2. Select the tasks you want to link by clicking them; hold Ctrl to select multiple non-adjacent tasks.
  3. With tasks selected, click the Link Tasks button in the Schedule group to create a default Finish-to-Start dependency.
  4. Review the dependency arrow that appears between tasks on the Gantt chart; double-click the arrow to modify the dependency type if needed.

📌 Why this matters

Properly defined task dependencies are essential for accurate project scheduling in Microsoft Project, as they ensure each task begins only when its predecessor is complete. The Link Tasks feature automatically adjusts downstream dates when any change is made, reducing manual rescheduling effort and preventing schedule conflicts. For project managers overseeing complex plans, visualizing Finish-to-Start and other dependency types on the Gantt chart provides clear visibility into the critical path and overall project flow.
