Use this interactive demo to learn how to set the critical path in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

To set the critical path in Microsoft Project, follow these steps:

‍

  1. Let's start by opening your Microsoft Project file and ensuring you're in the 'Gantt Chart' view.
  2. Now, navigate to the 'Format' tab in the ribbon (under 'Gantt Chart Tools' when the Gantt Chart is active).
  3. In the 'Bar Styles' group, find and check the 'Critical Tasks' checkbox. This tells Project to visually highlight your project's critical path.
  4. Your critical path tasks are now set in red on the Gantt chart.

📌 Why this matters

Identifying your critical path reveals which tasks directly impact your project deadline, letting you focus resources where delays hurt most. You can confidently negotiate scope changes by showing stakeholders exactly which tasks are non-negotiable versus those with built-in flexibility.

This visual clarity also helps you spot opportunities to fast-track delivery by adding resources to critical tasks or finding creative ways to run them in parallel, rather than wasting effort optimizing tasks that won't accelerate your overall timeline.
