Use this interactive demo to learn how to save a project baseline snapshot in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

Setting a baseline in Microsoft Project captures your original project plan — including task dates, durations, and costs — as a fixed reference point. This allows project managers to track variances and measure actual progress against the approved schedule throughout the project lifecycle.

Steps

  1. Click on the Project tab in the ribbon menu to access project-level scheduling options.
  2. Find and select Set Baseline from the Schedule group to capture your current plan as a measurable snapshot.
  3. From the dropdown menu, choose Set Baseline... to open the baseline options dialog box.
  4. Select which baseline number you want to set from the available options.
  5. Ensure Entire project is selected to baseline all tasks, or choose Selected tasks if you only want to baseline specific items.
  6. Click OK to save your baseline and establish a reference point for tracking schedule variances as work progresses.

📌 Why this matters

Setting a baseline in Microsoft Project is a fundamental project management practice that gives teams a fixed reference point to compare planned versus actual progress. Without a saved baseline, project managers cannot accurately measure schedule or cost variances, making it impossible to identify delays or budget overruns early. This feature is essential for earned value analysis, stakeholder reporting, and keeping complex projects on track. Learning to set a baseline correctly ensures your project data remains reliable from kickoff through completion.
