How to Remove Resources from Microsoft Project

Use this interactive demo to learn how to remove resources from your Microsoft Project plan.

‍

‍

Here’s how to do it:

‍

  1. Let's start by opening your Microsoft Project file. Look for the task that needs its resources adjusted and click to select it.
  2. Now, double-click on your selected task to open its properties. This will bring up the Task Information dialog box.
  3. In the Task Information dialog, select 'Resources'.
  4. From the list of assigned resources, click to select the specific resource you want to remove from this task.
  5. With the resource selected, simply press the DELETE key on your keyboard.
  6. Finally, click the "OK" button to confirm and save your changes. The task will now be updated without the removed resource.

📌 Why this matters

Removing resources from tasks lets you reallocate team members to higher-priority work without deleting the entire task or starting over. This becomes especially valuable when project scope changes or when you discover certain skills aren't actually needed for specific deliverables.

Beyond simple reassignment, this process preserves your original task structure and timeline estimates while giving you the flexibility to redistribute workload based on real-world constraints, budget adjustments, or evolving project requirements that emerge as work progresses.
