Use this interactive demo to learn how to remove a constraint in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Follow these easy steps:

‍

  1. Double click on the task from which you want to remove the constraint.
  2. Open the Task Information and click the 'Advanced' tab in the dialog box.
  3. In the 'Constraint type' menu, click the drop down.
  4. In the 'Constraint type' dropdown list, select 'As Soon As Possible'.
  5. Click 'OK' to save the changes.

📌 Why this matters

Removing constraints gives your project schedule the flexibility to automatically adjust when changes occur. When you lock tasks to specific dates, you're essentially fighting against the scheduling engine's ability to optimize your timeline.

By switching back to "As Soon As Possible," you allow the software to recalculate dependencies and find the most efficient path forward when delays happen or resources shift. This becomes crucial during project execution when reality rarely matches your original plan, and rigid constraints can create artificial bottlenecks that delay your entire project unnecessarily.
