How to Recover Unsaved Files in Adobe Acrobat

Use this interactive demo to learn how to recover unsaved files in Adobe Acrobat.

‍

‍

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to recover unsaved work in Adobe Acrobat after an unexpected crash or shutdown.

‍

Note: This recovery works when Acrobat (or your computer) shuts down unexpectedly and Autosave has a recovery file available. If you closed the file and chose not to save, Acrobat typically deletes the autosave file, and you usually can’t recover those changes.

‍

  1. Re-open Adobe Acrobat (or reopen the PDF you were working on).
  2. When Acrobat prompts you to open recovered file(s), click Yes.
  3. Save the recovered file(s) (use the same name, or Save As if you want a copy).
  4. To make sure recovery is enabled next time, go to Edit > Preferences >Documents and turn on Automatically Save Document Changes To Temporary File Every _ Minutes, then set the interval you want.

📌 Why this matters

You can rescue hours of work that would otherwise be lost forever when your computer crashes or power goes out unexpectedly. Beyond just recovering your immediate progress, this process reveals Adobe's hidden autosave system that continuously backs up your changes in the background.

Most people discover this feature only after a crisis, but once you understand how it works, you can adjust the autosave intervals to match your workflow and ensure you never lose more than a few minutes of editing again.
