Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a password to a shared Dropbox folder link.

Quick summary

You can password protect a Dropbox folder by enabling the Require password toggle in the shared link settings. This lets you control access so only people with the correct password can open your shared Dropbox link.

Steps

  1. Log in to Dropbox by selecting the email you want to use.
  2. Click Continue to complete the login process.
  3. Choose the folder you want to password protect.
  4. Hover over the three dots (vertical ellipsis menu) next to the folder.
  5. Select Copy Link from the dropdown menu.
  6. Click Manage to open the link settings panel.
  7. Select the Link Tab for either editing or viewing access.
  8. Toggle Require password to the On position.
  9. Set your chosen password in the password field.
  10. Click Save to apply the password protection to the shared link.

📌 Why this matters

Password protecting a Dropbox folder gives teams and individuals precise control over who can access shared files, reducing the risk of unauthorized viewing or data leaks. This feature is essential for businesses sharing sensitive documents, client files, or confidential project assets via shared links. By requiring a password on a Dropbox shared link, you add a critical layer of security without removing the convenience of cloud-based file sharing. It is a straightforward way to enforce access control directly within Dropbox, with no third-party tools required.
