How to Make a Task Critical in Microsoft Project

Use this interactive demo to learn how to mark a task as critical in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Follow these steps:

‍

  1. Select a task in Microsoft Project and drag it forward to adjust its timing.
  2. When you move the task, it becomes part of the critical path.
  3. In the Planning Wizard prompt, choose “Move the task to start on Thursday and keep the link.”
  4. Click 'OK' to save the changes.
  5. These steps allow you to create or influence the critical path in your project schedule.

📌 Why this matters

Making tasks critical gives you direct control over your project's completion date and helps you identify where delays will have the biggest impact. When you manually adjust the critical path, you're essentially telling the system which dependencies matter most for your specific situation.

This becomes particularly valuable when you have parallel workstreams or optional tasks that standard algorithms might not prioritize correctly. You can then focus your risk management and resource allocation on the tasks that truly drive your timeline.
