Use this interactive demo to learn how to group and indent tasks into a summary task in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

A summary task in Microsoft Project groups related subtasks under a single parent task, giving project managers a rolled-up view of duration, cost, and progress. You create one by entering tasks in the Gantt Chart view and using the Indent Task button to establish the hierarchy.

Steps

  1. From the Task tab, navigate to the Gantt Chart view.
  2. Enter the tasks that should be grouped together in the task list.
  3. Select the tasks you want to nest under the summary task.
  4. Click the Indent Task button from the Task ribbon.
  5. Enter a unique or descriptive name for your new summary task.
  6. The top task becomes the summary task, and the indented ones become subtasks.

📌 Why this matters

Summary tasks in Microsoft Project are essential for organizing complex project schedules into manageable, hierarchical phases. By grouping related subtasks under a single parent task, project managers get an automatic roll-up of duration, cost, and completion percentage without manual calculation. This structure makes it easier to communicate high-level progress to stakeholders while still tracking granular task-level detail. Mastering summary tasks is a foundational skill for anyone building professional project plans in Microsoft Project.
