Use this interactive demo to learn how to configure a 6-day work week schedule in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows you how to create a custom calendar in Microsoft Project that includes Saturday as a working day, enabling accurate scheduling for projects that require a 6-day work week. By using the Change Working Time dialog, you can define specific working hours for Saturday and apply them across your entire project schedule.

Steps

  1. Click on the Project tab in the top ribbon menu to access project-level settings.
  2. Select Change Working Time from the dropdown menu that appears.
  3. In the dialog box, click Create New Calendar to set up a custom 6-day work week schedule.
  4. Enter a meaningful name for your new calendar and click OK to proceed.
  5. Click on the Work Weeks tab to customize which days are designated as working days.
  6. Select Saturday from the days list, then choose Set day(s) to these specific working times to make it an active working day.
  7. Enter your desired Saturday working hours — such as 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM — adjusted to your project requirements.
  8. Click OK to save all changes and apply the 6-day work week with Saturdays included to your project schedule.

📌 Why this matters

Configuring a 6-day work week in Microsoft Project is essential for project managers running accelerated timelines, construction projects, or any initiative that requires Saturday as a standard working day. Without a custom calendar, Microsoft Project defaults to a 5-day week, causing inaccurate task durations, missed deadlines, and misaligned resource planning. By using the Change Working Time feature to create a custom calendar, project managers can ensure that scheduling, resource allocation, and deadline calculations all reflect real-world working conditions. This capability gives teams precise control over project calendars, making it a critical skill for anyone managing time-sensitive or high-intensity projects in Microsoft Project.
