Use this interactive demo to learn how to create anchor links within a single Confluence page.

Quick summary

Linking to a section within the same page in Confluence requires inserting an anchor link and referencing it with a #hashtag URL. This technique lets readers jump directly to specific content without leaving the page.

Steps

  1. Type /anchor in the editor and choose "Anchor link" to insert an anchor at your target section.
  2. Enter a unique anchor name (avoid using spaces) in the anchor name field.
  3. Confirm that the anchor is placed discreetly — it will not appear on the published page.
  4. Select the text you want to turn into a link, then press Ctrl + K (or Cmd + K on Mac) to open the link dialog.
  5. In the link field, type #youranchorname using the exact anchor name with a # in front, then click Insert.
  6. Click Publish to apply your changes to the page.
  7. Test the link to confirm it jumps directly to the anchored section.

📌 Why this matters

Adding anchor links within a single Confluence page allows teams to navigate long documents instantly without endless scrolling. This feature is essential for structured knowledge bases, project wikis, and documentation pages where readers need quick access to specific sections. By using Confluence's built-in anchor link functionality, content authors can create a better reading experience and reduce the time users spend searching for information. Mastering in-page anchor links is a foundational Confluence skill that improves both usability and overall documentation quality.
