Use this interactive demo to learn how to link text frames in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to link text frames in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To link text frames in Adobe InDesign, click the '+' icon at the bottom of the text frame to activate the linking feature.
  2. After clicking, drag your cursor to the next text frame and release to create the link.
  3. To view the connections, activate Text Threads by going to the top menu and selecting 'View.'
  4. From the menu, select 'Extras' → 'Show Text Threads.'‍
  5. Once activated, you will see a line connecting the frames, indicating that the text frame link was successful.

📌 Why this matters

Linking text frames lets you create flowing text across multiple columns, pages, or complex layouts without manually copying and pasting content. When you edit text in one linked frame, changes automatically flow through the entire chain, maintaining consistent formatting and eliminating version control headaches.

This becomes invaluable for magazines, newsletters, and reports where articles span multiple pages or columns. You can also easily adjust frame sizes and positions while the text automatically reflows, giving you complete design flexibility without breaking your content structure.
