Use this interactive demo to learn how to link files in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to link files in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To link different files in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click 'File.'
  2. From the menu, select 'Place' to open the file browser and locate your file.
  3. Select your file (supported formats include .AI, .PDF, .JPEG, .PNG, .SVG, and more.) then click 'OK' to open it and proceed.
  4. For this tutorial, we will open a PDF file. Click 'Place PDF.'
  5. Drag your PDF onto the page to place it, and repeat the same steps for other file formats, such as images.‍
  6. Open the Links panel either from the top menu or by clicking the chain icon in the right-side menu to view all linked files in your document. Any missing or modified links will display a warning icon.

📌 Why this matters

Linking files keeps your InDesign documents lightweight and editable while maintaining high-quality output. Instead of embedding heavy images and graphics that bloat file sizes, linked files remain separate, making documents faster to save, share, and collaborate on.

When you update a linked file externally—like adjusting a logo in Illustrator or color-correcting a photo in Photoshop—those changes automatically reflect in your InDesign layout. This creates a seamless workflow where team members can work on different assets simultaneously while your design stays current without manual updates.
