Quick summary

Linking fields in Airtable connects records across tables, enabling relational data structures without complex formulas. Using the Link to Another Record field type, you can instantly relate data from one Airtable table to another and pull through lookup values.

Steps

  1. In your Airtable, find the specific field you want to link and click the drop-down arrow next to it.
  2. Select Edit Field from the dropdown menu.
  3. Open the Field Type menu and choose Link to Another Record.
  4. Select the specific table you want to link the field to.
  5. Click Save to apply the field type change.
  6. Review the provided details about your change request, then click Confirm Change.
  7. Choose your preferred Lookup Field and click Add Field to include it.
  8. Your Airtable fields are now linked — related records will appear instantly across both tables.

📌 Why this matters

Linking fields in Airtable is essential for building relational databases that eliminate duplicate data entry and keep records synchronized across multiple tables. The Link to Another Record field type allows teams to connect projects, tasks, contacts, and assets in a single base, creating a single source of truth. Combined with Lookup fields, linked records surface related data automatically, reducing manual updates and improving data accuracy. This capability is central to scaling Airtable beyond simple spreadsheets into a fully connected operations hub.
