Use this interactive demo to learn how to indent the second line in Adobe InDesign.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to create a second-line indent (hanging indent) in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To add an indent to the second line of a paragraph in Adobe InDesign, go to the top menu and click 'Window.'
  2. From the menu, select 'Type and Tables' → 'Paragraphs' to open the Paragraph panel.
  3. Once the panel opens, select the paragraph and adjust the left indent by increasing the value.
  4. Now, select the 'First Line Indent' and set it to a negative value to move the first line backward while keeping the second line in place.
  5. Notice how the paragraph indents adjust based on your changes.

📌 Why this matters

Creating hanging indents transforms ordinary text into professional-looking bibliographies, reference lists, and bulleted content where the first line needs to stand out while subsequent lines align neatly underneath. This formatting technique is essential for academic papers, legal documents, and marketing materials where visual hierarchy matters.

Beyond basic formatting, hanging indents actually improve reading comprehension by creating visual anchors that help readers quickly scan and locate specific entries in long lists, making your documents both more polished and more functional.
