Use this interactive demo to learn how to import a custom visual into your Power BI report.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to import a custom visual into Power BI Desktop using the Visualizations pane and a .pbiviz file. Once imported, the visual becomes instantly available on your report canvas without any additional configuration.

Steps

  1. Open your Power BI report in Power BI Desktop and click on the Visualizations pane on the right side of your screen.
  2. Find the three-dot menu at the bottom of the visuals panel.
  3. From the menu, select Import a visual from a file to bring in your custom visualization.
  4. Browse your computer to locate the .pbiviz file containing the visual you want to import.
  5. Click Open to start the import process.
  6. Review the confirmation notification that the visual was successfully imported, then click OK to dismiss it.
  7. Your imported visual now appears in the Visualizations pane, ready to drag onto your report canvas.

📌 Why this matters

Importing custom visuals into Power BI Desktop lets analysts and report builders extend the default visualization library with tailored, third-party, or internally developed chart types that better fit their data storytelling needs. The ability to load a .pbiviz file directly through the Visualizations pane means teams can standardize branded or specialized visuals across all reports without relying on the AppSource marketplace. This feature is critical for organizations that need full control over their reporting toolkit, enabling faster iteration and more precise data presentation in Power BI dashboards.
