Use this interactive demo to learn how to highlight the critical path in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Follow these easy steps:

‍

  1. Open your Microsoft Project file and ensure you're viewing the 'Gantt Chart' view. This is where we'll highlight the critical path to identify tasks that directly impact your project deadline.
  2. Click on the 'Format' tab in the ribbon at the top of your screen. This tab contains all the visual customization options we need for displaying the critical path clearly.
  3. Look for the 'Bar Styles' group and check the 'Critical Tasks' checkbox. This tells Project to visually distinguish the critical path tasks from regular tasks.
  4.  Your critical path tasks now appear highlighted in red on the Gantt chart.

📌 Why this matters

Highlighting the critical path transforms scattered task data into a clear roadmap of what truly drives your project timeline. You can instantly see which delays will push back your entire deadline versus tasks with built-in buffer time.

Beyond basic scheduling, this visual clarity helps you allocate your best resources to the right places and communicate realistic expectations to stakeholders. When scope changes inevitably arise, you'll quickly identify whether new requests affect your core timeline or can be absorbed without impacting delivery dates.
