Use this interactive demo to learn how to group a Salesforce report by calendar month.

Quick summary

To group by month in a Salesforce report, open the report, add Close Date to the Group Rows field in the Outline panel, then set the date grouping to Calendar Month. This lets sales teams analyze pipeline and closed revenue broken down by month directly inside Salesforce CRM.

Steps

  1. Open the Reports tab in the top menu of the dashboard or access it through the App Launcher.
  2. Open an existing report or create a new one.
  3. Go to the left-side menu where the Outline panel is located, and type Close Date in the Group Rows field.
  4. Select Close Date from the search results.
  5. Click the dropdown beside the newly added Close Date row.
  6. Choose Group Date By, then select Calendar Month.
  7. Your Salesforce report is now successfully grouped by month.

📌 Why this matters

Grouping a Salesforce report by month is a critical skill for sales managers and revenue operations teams who need to track monthly pipeline trends, quota attainment, and closed deal volume. Salesforce's built-in Group Date By feature lets users segment any date field — including Close Date — by Calendar Month without requiring custom formulas or third-party tools. This makes it faster to produce monthly performance reports, forecast accuracy reviews, and board-ready CRM summaries directly inside Salesforce. Mastering this feature reduces manual data exports and keeps revenue analytics centralized in the platform.
