Quick summary
Dropbox displays checkmark icons on synced folders, which you can remove by setting files to online-only mode or using the Do Not Sync option. This guide walks Mac users through both methods — via Finder and via Dropbox Preferences — to clean up folder icon overlays.
Steps
- Open Finder and select Dropbox from the left-hand sidebar.
- Right-click the file in your Dropbox folder and select Do Not Sync.
- Confirm the action by selecting Don't sync in the dialog prompt.
- Alternatively, click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar to open Dropbox directly.
- Click your profile icon then select Preferences.
- Under Preferences, go to Sync and choose Online-only to remove checkmarks from your folders.
